As a homeschool mom, I’m home and fixing three meals a day in my kitchen most days during the week. Sometimes its just cooking and sometimes its also teaching my children how to cook or using the food to support our curriculum. On this page I’m collecting a variety of resources to help you be more efficient in the kitchen, teach your children how to cook, and have fun adding food to your schooling. I plan to add new resources each month and I welcome questions and thoughts in the comments.

Time and Sanity Saving Tools

6qt. Instant Pot (saves me hours of time each week and as a bonus makes making my own yogurt super simple)

Slow Cooker (I highly recommend one with a timer and if you ever take food to other places the lid latches are a nice bonus. This one is a newer edition of the model that I use. I use my mine four to five days a week. )


Recipe Ideas (General)

Homemade Yellow Cake Mix (We keep several jars of this in our pantry for cakes, cobblers, and even muffins. I add fruit and oats to the muffins and cobblers. )

Earl Grey IceBox Cookies (These are very tasty and the dough freezes well for a quick and easy treat whenever you need them.)

Thanksgiving Cranberry French Toast (This is a simple, delicious addition to our Thanksgiving brunch)

Recipe Ideas (Instant Pot)

Chicken Taco Soup (Instant Pot) (This recipe was really tasty. I did leave out the cilantro as it gives my husband migraines. I also recommend cutting back on the liquid just a bit for a thicker soup. However, the whole family enjoyed the soup and with an extra can of black beans added in it made a enough for us to have lunch with the leftovers the next day. )

Cranberry Almond Instant Pot Rice Pudding (This is going to be a new winter staple on our breakfast menu, and if you don’t have cranberries you can substitute in some other fruit.)

Better than General Tso’s (We tried this one minus the red pepper flake and the whole family loved it. I cooked rice in the Instant Pot first, took it out and put a lid on it to stay hot and then cooked the chicken.)

Recipe Ideas (Crock Pot)

Carnitas ( I cook these in the crock pot and serve with tortillas or over rice cooked in the Instant Pot. They are one of our favorite simple meals for really busy days. They could also be done in the Instant Pot if you prefer.)

Cookbooks for Kids

(that don’t just involve boxed mixes and sandwiches)

Emeril’s There’s a Chef in my World  (This is my son’s favorite cookbook and features recipes from around the world.)

Better Homes and Gardens Jr. Cookbook (older edition) ( I specify the older edition because I have not used the newer one and several of the reviews mention it moving more towards snacks and junk food. This one does still have more processed food and snacks than the Emeril cookbook, but it has great pictures and step by step instructions.)

Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day (We love this bread and its simple enough for my nine year old to make. )
