A Month of Thanksgiving and Praise!

20171123_104230.jpg The American holiday of Thanksgiving may only be a day, but we love to spend the whole month focused on giving thanks and praising God for all he has done for us. We started last week by writing down something we are thankful for each night and placing it in our scarecrow container on the kitchen table. On Thanksgiving morning, we will gather around the table for brunch and read them aloud. We hope this will encourage a mindset of thankfulness all month long.

Thanksgiving Books

We have switched out our fall book display for one that focuses on Thanksgiving books. Some of these books focus on the historical significance of the holiday, while others generally focus on giving thanks.  We will read many of them together over the course of the month, but the very first one will be Cranberry Thanksgiving. It has become a favorite and a family tradition to read the book and bake cranberry bread from the recipe included at the end of the book. While it is a picture book, even my older children enjoy gathering around with a warm cup of apple cider to listen to me read it.  I’ve shared a list of our Thanksgiving books at the end of this post, and I would love to hear your favorites.

Showing Gratitude

We love to make sure that people know how thankful we are for them, especially this time of year. We send cards to friends and family members that we think might could use a bit of encouragement. While the holidays are my favorite time of year, it can be a lonely time for widows or shut-ins, and a fun card from the children can brighten their day. We also like to put together goody bags for people who serve us, such as the men that pick up our recycling or the people at the grocery store.

Thanksgiving Traditions

Thanksgiving Day is a day full of fun and tradition for our family. On Thanksgiving evening, we always go ‘home’ and have a big Thanksgiving dinner with my family. The cousins all sit around and talk and look through the sales papers while the little ones play. My daughter loves to make Thanksgiving-themed appetizers for that event, such as a turkey-shaped cheese ball or tray.  My son bakes either candy roaster or sweet potato pies to bring. I just added that recipe to the Free Resource Library! Since we do that in the evening and did not want two big turkey meals on the same day, we created a different holiday tradition for our immediate family. Each Thanksgiving, I make a big brunch, and we watch the Macy’s Christmas Parade.  Sometimes it is just my immediate family, and sometimes, we have friends or family that join us.

Thanksgiving Brunch

We keep it simple and tasty with cranberry-stuffed French toast, sausage or bacon, and egg casserole.  We finish that off with some hot apple cider, cocoa, or eggnog to make for a simple but memorable Thanksgiving brunch. You can download my cranberry french toast recipe free on our homeschool in the kitchen page. Our hymn study this month is also related to Thanksgiving. We are focusing on the hymn ‘Count Your Blessings’ through listening, study, and copywork. I encourage you to check out that post for a couple of free downloads to assist your study and a list of other songs that can encourage you as you give thanks this month and every month.

How We Celebrate Independence Day!

“It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews [shows], Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations [fireworks] from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” John Adams

20160704_102517

The 4th of July, or Independence Day, is a fun-filled and educational holiday in our home.  On or around the 4th of July, we are blessed to be able to celebrate with family and friends (some of whom live in other states and only come to visit once a year).

We enjoy a great local festival and parade, lots of good food, some lazy time on the river, and hours spent catching up with old friends. However, we also want to make sure that our children understand the significance of this holiday.

Learning Through Teaching History

Our local historical site and the first permanent capitol of North Carolina, Tryon Palace, offers a day full of fun and education on the ‘Glorious Fourth’. As volunteers with Tryon Palace, we will spend a portion of our day assisting in teaching others about the history and significance of July 4th.

My husband is involved with their Continental Line unit, and my children will demonstrate how to load and fire a cannon (using a child-sized model), play colonial games, and answer questions about colonial and revolutionary times from a child’s perspective.

They also get to hear a great recitation of the Deceleration of Independence and talk with other historical interpreters as they revisit that day in history.  For our family, this is the perfect balance of fun and education.  Many towns and historical sites have fun Independence Day activities, and I encourage you to try to find one near you.

In addition to an educational program, there are many fun activities you can do leading up to Independence Day. I’ve included some resources below that can get you started on a great study of the history behind this celebration and some fun, hands-on art activities. We would love to hear how you celebrate July 4th.

Silverdale Press LLC White House Holidays Unit Studies Review

20180618_112600
Voting Rights Posters! (yes I saw the typo 😉 )

When I signed up to review the White House Holidays Unit Studies by Silverdale Press LLC my plan had been to incorporate parts of several of the studies into our existing history program. I figured that I could condense them down and work through several applicable ones.

However, while I personally looked over several of them, we only did one complete one as a family. Not because we didn’t enjoy them but because I felt like they were so good that we didn’t want to skip around and miss out on valuable content. I wanted to take the time to review the entire unit study and let it sink in.

How Did The Unit Studies Work?

These unit studies are broken down by holiday, but I made my choice based on the fact that we were studying the civil rights movement as a key part of our history last month. I had planned to use several resources and supplement them with parts of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Study. When we received the unit studies, I realized that I would not need to supplement our studies with anything other than our family discussions.

Martin-Luther-Kind-Jr-Unit-Study

In our home, we typically do history studies twice a week. As civil rights was only one component of the era we were studying, we decided to devote one day each week to the unit study and complete our studies of the other events of that time period on the second day.

While this was a Martin Luther King Jr. unit study, it also talked about other people involved in the civil rights movement. The name White House Holidays Unit Studies also focused on how Martin Luther King Jr. interacted and worked with the men who were president during his time as a civil rights activist.

How We Used the Study

Each week I would read one of the lessons aloud to my children. This would inevitably bring about family discussions about this very difficult time in our nation’s history. Once I had read and discussed any questions the children had, we would complete the various activities that were included for that week.

A timeline continued throughout the study and each week that would add the events that had been discussed to the timeline. There was also a map where they could mark the various cities where the event occurred. There was a printable map included at the end of the study, which is sufficient, but after a couple of weeks, my children decided that it was more fun to find them on our big wall map.

20180618_112516

Activities for All Ages

In addition to the timeline and maps each week, there were various activities broken up by age. Some activities are for grades K-6, and some for 7-12. I went through each week and chose the best fit for our family. The children’s favorite activity, and possibly one of the most eye-opening activities, was completing a quiz that was used as a barrier to keep blacks from registering to vote. They were surprised at how difficult the quiz was and how unimportant and random many of the questions were. Honestly, I was surprised. By most standards, I am a very educated voter, and there were questions on that test that I could not answer.

Other activities included listening to freedom songs, making protest posters, analyzing speeches, and participating in a service project. There were craft activities for those children that learn well in that modality, writing activities that could easily count towards your language arts program, and other relevant and engaging activities.

Videos

Each lesson also included links to various video clips. We watched a couple each week to help the children better understand what we had read and discussed that week. My son was particularly enthralled with one of the clips, which featured the President on the phone with Martin Luther King Jr. We had just recently traveled to the Eisenhower National Historic Site as we studied through that era in history. So my children were very excited to make the connections of the Civil Rights movement with President Eisenhower.

Other Studies

In addition to the Martin Luther King Jr. study, they have studies for Labor Day, Valentine’s Day,  Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and one coming soon about George Washington. These studies could be done as your curriculum for a week leading up to the holiday or spread out over a month as we did. You could pick and choose a few of the activities or go all in and complete all of the options. We chose to use a study that correlated with our history studies that were in progress, but they could easily stand alone. They can be done around the holiday, but this one also worked fine for a different time of year. I look forward to doing the Labor Day study in September as we start our new school year.

Spring, One of My Four Favorite Seasons!

Spring is one of my four favorite seasons! Honestly, I enjoy all of the seasons, but by the end of one season, I’m ready for another. This year’s weather has been a roller coaster ride, and we have bounced between cold weather and warm weather for the last month. I’m hoping this warm weather is here to stay for a while.

Spring feels like such a time of renewal and new life. The birds are out singing, the flowers are blooming, the bees are buzzing, and life seems to hold so much hope and promise. I can’t forget my favorite part of spring, strawberries! We just had our first bucket of fresh strawberries for the season last week and they were so good!

Spring Fever Homeschool Solutions

One part of spring that could be viewed as a negative is ‘spring fever.’ The children, and if most of us are honest, the parents are ready to be outside. Sitting inside and doing schoolwork can seem arduous on the first pretty days after winter. To balance that natural desire to be outside enjoying the weather with our need to complete our schoolwork we take school outside.

Sometimes, like today, we literally take our schoolwork outside. Math seems a bit less tedious when there is grass under your feet and sun on your face. The children either take a table cloth to lay on, sit at the picnic table, or grab a folding chair and take their work outside. To help us stay organized when we do school outside, we keep book bags where they can store their materials.

Rainy Spring Day Homeschool Activities

When it is time to come in or on rainy days, we can do schoolwork related to spring inside. This can be completing on of the fun Spring Chalk Pastel Lessons, doing a study on birds, flowers, or plants, or even reading books about Spring. We have started going through the spring chalk pastel art course and are really enjoying it.

It is such a fun and easy way to incorporate art into our nature study this month.  A couple of good book options are Eric Carle’s The Tiny Seed or the one we want to read this year, The Penderwicks in Spring. We have read the first book in this series and really enjoyed it.

Other times, I use various parts of the season to create natural learning opportunities. It is the perfect time of year to learn about plants and gardening. You can study how to grow them, pollination, and nutrition by actually planting a garden, harvesting your crop, and my favorite part, eating what you grew.

If you cannot plant a garden where you live, you can plant a few windowsill plants or visit a local farm. In addition to gardening, we love to raise baby chicks to become laying hens which provide eggs for our family and some of our friends.

Even if you can’t raise chickens, it is a good time of year to visit your local lawn and garden or feed store and let the children see the baby chicks. You can also purchase simple kits to raise and release butterflies or lady bugs that let children see the life cycles up close. These are nice because it gives you the live animals and hands on experience without the long term commitment of animals like chicks.

Spring Bird Study

Spring is also an excellent time to study birds. You can get a field guide, like this Peterson’s First Guide to Birds to help you identify the various birds you see near your home. This is one of my favorite bird guides because it is very simple and easy to use. Some other guides are more thorough but can be overwhelming to children (and parents that are new to bird watching).

If you want to entice more birds to your yard or make it a bit easier to study them you can put up a bird feeder. This can be a homemade one or something like this inexpensive bird feeder that attaches to your windows.

I’ve talked about Our Hiking Adventures before, and spring time is a great time to hike. This is a great way to see different plants and animals while getting a bit of exercise. There are other Peterson’s First Guides like the bird one above that can be a great way to learn more about what you are seeing as you hike.

If you have small children, they may enjoy just walking and looking for various colors or shapes. Whether you go to a local park or simply ‘hike’ though a nearby field or forest it is a great chance to get outside and enjoy spring.

Spring Fun

Of course, Spring is not only about school. There are so many fun things to do in the spring. You can go to a local farm and pick strawberries or visit your local farmers market to pick out yummy spring vegetables.

My children enjoy picking (and eating) strawberries, and it seems they eat more than they put in the baskets some years. Our strawberry-farming friends even joke about weighing the little ones before and after picking.  This is a great way to get children excited about eating healthy foods and provide an understanding about where food comes from.

It is a wonderful time to break out the sidewalk chalk and the bubbles and just enjoy being outside. Kites are also a big hit at our house; from little simple ones, they make themselves to larger ones that need a little help and guidance. They are a fun way to spend a spring afternoon.

In addition to these ideas, I’ve added a fun spring bucket list to the free resource library with lots of fun ideas for spring!

St. Patrick’s Day Fun and Resources

St. Patrick’s Day takes on many different forms in different families. For some it is a celebration of the life of Saint Patrick, for some it is about everything green, leprechauns and rainbows. With a new baby in the house we are not planning on going ‘all out’ this year with any kind of St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

Saint Patrick’s Day Homeschool Food Ideas

However, we are still going to do a few fun and simple things to remember the day. We love corn beef, so any excuse for corn beef and cabbage is welcome in our home, even if it’s nor really and “Irish’ dish. If you want to make your own from scratch, or you’re interested in some culinary history, check out the Corn the Beef Good Eats episode. It is also a simple meal to cook in my crock pot which is a big plus!

The children love fun thematic snacks, so I’ll let the older children choose a snack or two from the ideas below to fix on their own. Then I can read one of our St. Patrick’s Day books while we all enjoy the snacks.

Preschool Saint Patrick’s Day Ideas

For my three year old, we have changed out his Valentine’s Day sensory bottle for a St. Patrick’s Day themed bottle. I simply took out the pink and white beads and hearts (putting them in a bag for next year) and added in some adorable Shamrock jewels.

I found my Shamrock jewels at Hobby Lobby but you could also use something like this confetti that I found on Amazon Prime. The ones I found are different sizes so we can talk about smaller and larger. You could also use them for counting. Younger children will just enjoy seeing the colors and movement as they shake the bottle.

Saint Patricks Day Bible Lessons

I also want to use the St. Patrick’s Day Bible verse resource to cover the Beatitudes. We will use them for copy work with the older children.  This is an easy way to incorporate it into our regular school day.

We will watch the clip about St. Patrick from Veggie Tales: Sumo of the Opera which tells the story of how he ended up ministering to the people of Ireland. I will probably also substitute the abbreviations page for their grammar work one day because I’ve noticed recently that we could use a review of some standard abbreviations.

Saint Patrick’s Day Homeschool Art Lessons

We will hopefully have time to enjoy a chalk art pastel lesson. They have one with a shamrock as well as a rainbow in their Spring Art Lessons that would be perfect to go along with this study. If you are going to do rainbows there is also a fun Magic School Bus episode about rainbows.

PI Day! Ideas and Resources

20170314_141201
Pi Day Snacks!

What is Pi Day?

Some of you are as excited as I am about Pi day, some of you think I don’t know how to spell, and a few are wondering why we are celebrating a math concept. Pi day is a fun day that in our family also involves pie. While we didn’t celebrate when my children were really young, we have been celebrating Pi day for several years, and last year started celebrating with a group of our friends. It is celebrated on March 14th because the number PI starts with 3.14.

Homeschool Pi Day Celebrations

We gather together with round snacks, anything from sweet pies, pizza pies, and even a few moon pies. Then we have lots of fun with a variety of activities. Last year we did an art activity about pi, read some of the Sir Circumference Books and enjoyed our time together with friends.

We intend to have a very similar Pi day this year though I’ve found a few new resources and come up with a couple of extra ideas to keep things interesting. One thing we are going to do this year is to have the kids work together in teams to come up with as many words that begin with the letters ‘pi’ as they can in a set amount of time. This is a great way to include a little spelling and a lot of fun.  We will still enjoy a read aloud from the Sir Circumference series though I will choose a different book this year. They are always so much fun for all ages and do a great job introducing or reinforcing the geometric concepts.

Preschool Pi Day Ideas

In our group each family contributes, so there will be several other activities or ideas included in our Pi Day party. I also found these simple ideas for including preschoolers in Pi Day. While our group is geared towards tweens and teens, as is the case with many home school groups there are plenty of little sibling tag alongs. They will enjoy the some of the other activities but can enjoy one of the simple crafts like cutting out circles or doing some circle painting while the older children focus on the more complex ideas.

Pi Day Snack Ideas

For food you can make your own homemade pies and pizza, find other round foods (burgers, english muffins, etc) or call Papa Johns and let them take care of it. Since I will have a new baby and a busy day we plan to order pizza and let the children either bake a pie or some chocolate chip cookies. This is our favorite easy homemade pie crust and it works great with any filling we have tried. If you want to make a savory pie this recipe uses that pie crust to make a potato bacon torte that is really yummy, or if you’re feeling adventurous and historical you can try onion pie.  If we are not all tired of pie by dinner, we may have one of those for dinner.

I hope that you enjoy Pi day! Tell us your Pi day plans in the comments!

Dr. Seuss’s Birthday!

Dr. Seuss is among our favorite children’s authors. There are so many fun options to read aloud and enjoy. While I use his books with our young children as fun stories and to encourage an understanding of rhyme, even my older children will sit and listen as I read them aloud. His birthday, March 2nd, is celebrated in homes, schools and libraries across the country.  Often it is used as a day to encourage reading books by many authors.

Reading Ideas for Dr. Seuss’s Birthday

Since reading is such an important part of our educational philosophy and the Dr. Seuss books are such favorites, we typically try to take the day off of our ‘regular’ studies and enjoy a fun day of activities and reading. This year each of the older children will pick a favorite Dr. Seuss book to read aloud to the family. I will also set aside some time for everyone in the family to read independently.  Next, we will play some rhyming games. My older children enjoy them and the 3 year old is starting to learn about rhymes so it will be a good opportunity to encourage that skill in a fun way.

Dr. Seuss Pinterest

Dr. Seuss Book Display

One simple and fun way we encourage reading and a variety of books is to feature books for various holidays, events, or authors on “display’ in our dining room.  We set up the books we have for that theme across the top of our cabinet where they will stay out until we change themes (normally every few weeks). The children can take them down to read and just put them back up when they are finished. This helps highlight different books from our shelves and keeps them reading books on a variety of topics.

Seuss

Hands-On Dr. Seuss Learning Ideas

In addition to reading, they will enjoy making ‘oobleck’ to play with and talk about the science behind it. Then we will enjoy some fun Dr. Seuss food. As you can see in the pictures above we enjoy ‘Cat in the Hat’ Pizza and our own version of green eggs and ham (simply adding spinach to the eggs). Depending on how the day is going I may allow my son to pick out an additional snack that we can make together. All of my children love helping in the kitchen.

My three year old really enjoys his dot markers, so he will probably do the Red Fish Blue Fish dot painting activity while we read aloud. I have found at that age having something quiet to work on while we read increases their attention span fr listening to the stories.

There are many other fun crafts, writing prompts, math activities and more to make this day fun and meaningful for children of all ages. I have included a list of resources below with more fun recipes, printables, and activities. I’ve also included a list of a few great Dr. Seuss books in case you do not have any in your collection. Most years we use this as an opportunity to add one more Dr. Seuss book to our growing collection. You may also check with your local library or literacy group to see if they are doing any special activities.

P is for President!

Do you have a child interested in the presidents? My oldest finds them fascinating. He loves to listen to audiobooks, read books, and find other resources about various presidents. We have even had the opportunity to take him to visit several different presidential homes and birthplaces.

He is really looking forward to our President’s Day studies. President’s Day is celebrated on the third Monday of February in honor of George Washington’s birthday. It is a day that many focus on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, but it is also used to honor all of our nation’s presidents.

For the younger crowd, it is a great time for fun stories, crafts, and great snacks. For the older children, there are also great math activities, writing prompts, history lessons and lots more. This is one of the holidays that is easy to incorporate from preschool all the way to high school. The focus can be as narrow as George Washington or as broad as the Presidential History of the United States.

What Are We Doing For Presidents Day?

In our house this year, we are going to do some of the fun preschool snacks, a coloring page, and a couple of cute picture books for the youngest (though I’m sure everyone will enjoy the snacks). The parfaits will probably be our go-to snack since it is simple and nutritious. My older children love making pancakes, so I may let them try their hands and the presidential pancakes.

Teens and Tweens on Presidents Day

The older children will each pick a presidential biography to read for their reading assignment for the week. In addition, we will use some of the grammar sheets below as a nice review of some concepts that they seem to be forgetting in their writing. We have spent a great deal of time studying Washington and Lincoln already this year as we go through Our Journey Through History. Therefore, I plan to focus most of our activities on other lesser-studied presidents.

I will also probably include some time to watch the 60-second videos about different presidents. We also may spend some time focusing on the presidents from the Reconstruction and Gilded age which is the period of time we are focusing on this month in  Our Journey Through History.

We have the audio version of Heros of History Theodore Roosevelt that we are listening to this month as well. Depending on how our time is going and how interested the children are, we may incorporate some of the other activities into our lessons that week.

I’d love to know how you celebrate President’s Day and what resources you think your children will most enjoy. Let me know in the comments. Also, if you are looking for any other resources, ask in the comments, and I’ll see what I can find.

How We Do Valentine’s Day

Every family has a different take on Valentine’s Day. In our house, we really enjoy the holiday but our focus is on loving others in a Godly way and less about romantic love (though I still appreciate chocolate). We have lots of fun and enjoy each other while trying to find ways to be a blessing to others.

Our Valentine’s Story

Several years ago, things were busy and it was a difficult week but I wanted to do something fun to celebrate the day. Spur of the moment, I bundled up the children and drove to the grocery store. We bought ice cream, fruit, and all the fixins’ for ice cream sundaes. Much to the surprise and delight of the children, that was our lunch. While certainly not the nutritious meal that we strive for most days it was fun and memorable. So memorable, that as Valentine’s Day approached the next year the children began talking about our ‘tradition’ of having ice cream sundaes for lunch. So each year we have ice cream sundaes for a meal on Valentine’s Day.

Serving Others at Valentine’s Day

We try to remember those people in our lives that might find Valentine’s Day to be a sad time or be struggling and think of ways we can lift them up. We mail cards to widows that are missing their spouses, we have delivered goodies to neighbors, and made or bought little treats to give out to those we encounter that might need a smile. It is amazing the difference a small piece of candy given by a child can make in someone’s day.  The Bible is clear that we are to love and serve others and we find this to be a good time to remember and focus on showing His love.

Focus on Biblical Love for Valentine’s Day

There are many verses in the Bible about love and we try to focus on some of those throughout the month to help us learn more about what love should look like. We place them throughout our home as reminders, read some at the table and in our devotionals, and often use coloring pages and cards with verses on them as we share that love with others. 20180129_155450 Last year I found a great idea of putting up a heart with a nice comment for each child each morning ( I also did this for my husband.). I started on February 1st and went through the 14th. The children were surprised at first but then started looking for them each morning. This was a great way for me to focus on all of the things I love about my children. I found it easiest to have them all ready before February 1st so that I didn’t have to worry as much about a busy day derailing my best intentions.

Other Valentine’s Day Foods

Another simple idea that we often use is having a heart shaped meal that day. That might be pancakes or biscuits in the shape of hearts for breakfast or heart shaped pizza for dinner. This H is for Heart breakfast looks like it would be tasty and fun as well. These are fun for the children and great conversation starters about our hearts and how we should love God and others. 20180123_160121 There are also many resources available for reading, science, math and other subjects to help make school more thematic if you choose. For my older children this year we will mostly continue with our normal curriculum while adding in a few fun Valentine’s activities. We will also enjoy reading Cranberry Valentine while eating a bit of the Cranberry Upside Down Cake that is featured in the back of the book. My youngest will enjoy some of the coloring sheets and probably the playdoh idea below. In other years, we have followed the theme more comprehensively. I hope that you find the books and resources below to be useful as you plan no matter whether you plan to just add in a few activities or do a more thorough thematic approach.

Groundhog Day Resources

While certainly not one of the most important holidays on our calendar, we do enjoy a bit of fun on Groundhog Day. It is a great chance to focus on the weather or other related topics, especially with young children. I think what my children enjoy most about Groundhog Day is the pancakes. We found a cute idea for making pancakes that look like groundhogs several years ago, and the children really enjoy them.

With small children, you could spend the day or even the week learning about seasons or weather. Another great focus would be on groundhogs and other similar mammals. My older students will mostly continue with their regular studies, but we will be adding a fun writing prompt about Ground Hog day. However, with my three-year-old, we will spend some time discussing the weather with a few fun sensory and art projects.

We will also enjoy reading some great books and maybe sneak in a Magic School Bus episode on the weather. I also found this great free groundhog art lesson.  This is one of those days that we get to enjoy a bit of fun without a lot of added stress or expectations.
