Thanksgiving Resource Round Up and Gratitude Challenge/Printable

November is a great time to focus on gratitude and thankfulness. Over the last several years, we have shared various ideas and traditions to encourage gratitude. I will link those posts below so that you can take a look and see what might work for your family. This year we are going a 30-day gratitude challenge that starts today, November 1st (if you are reading this after November 1st please feel free to jump on in).

I will be sharing the day’s challenge each day on Facebook to help you keep track. I have included the entire list here so that you can plan ahead. There is even a printable version of the list at the end of the post if you want to put it on your refrigerator or somewhere in your home that would remind you each day.

I have tried to include a variety of ways that your family can show gratitude to God, each other, and other people. Please feel free to adapt these ideas to work best for your family. We will be going through them in order with the date coordinating with the number on the list. However, feel free to jump around to what works best for you that day.  I would love to see you share pictures from your gratitude challenge as we encourage each other. Use #gratitudechallenge and #schoolinswag to see them on social media.

  1. Start a gratitude tree or jar that each member of the family can add to each day
  2. Hymn Study: We Gather Together
  3. Alphabet Gratitude (work together as a family to come up with something you are thankful for using each letter of the alphabet)
  4. Scripture Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (Read and discuss or copy down into journals)
  5. Make sugar cookies in the shape of hearts or fall shapes and pass them out to people for whom you are thankful. This could be friends and family or people who you interact with throughout the day, such as cashiers, postal workers, bus drivers, etc.
  6. Read a Thanksgiving Book (If you need suggestions, you can check out this post for a great list.)
  7. Send a thank you card to someone who has blessed you.
  8. Gratitude Art: Draw or Paint a picture of something for which you are grateful.
  9. Hymn Study: Count Your Many Blessings
  10. Scripture Reading: Philippians 4:6-7  (Read and discuss or copy down into journals)
  11. Thanksgiving Poetry: Read some of these fun poems and maybe even write your own.
  12. Thankful Senses: Share one thing for each sense for which you are grateful. For example, I am grateful for the smell of roses in the summer, the warmth of hot cocoa on a cold day, etc.
  13. Thankful verses: Use a concordance or google and find out how many verses in the Bible talk about thankfulness. Based on that number, talk about how important thankfulness is for Christians.
  14. Sibling Gratitude: Make a card or craft for your sibling and tell them why you are thankful for them. If you do not have a sibling, choose another family member.
  15. Thankful Acrostic Poem: Create your own or print this free template
  16. Tell a Friend: Make a point to tell a friend why you are thankful for them. You can tell them, send them a card, or call them on the phone.
  17. Hymn Study: Come Ye Thankful People Come
  18. Thankful Colors: Share things for which you are thankful using as many colors as you can. For example, I am thankful for green grass, red apples, and blue water.
  19. Thankful Photos: Using a camera or your phone, take turns taking photos of things for which you are grateful. These can be turned into a collage or viewed as a slide show.
  20. Scripture Reading: Psalm 7:17 (Read and discuss or copy down into journals)
  21. Make cards or a small homemade gift for the staff or volunteers at your church to thank them for serving the Lord.
  22. Thank You, Jesus: Write a letter/prayer to Jesus telling him how thankful you are for all he has done for us.
  23. Show your gratitude for all of your blessings by doing something nice for someone else. Rake a neighbor’s yard, take can goods to the food pantry, do a sibling’s chore, etc.
  24. Scripture Reading: 1 Chronicles 16:34 (Read and discuss or copy down into journals)
  25. Make a thank you card for a local public servant ( trash collector, firefighter, police officer, etc
  26. Thankful I Spy Game: Play the I spy game but use things for which you are thankful. For example, I might pick the dishwasher because I am thankful that it makes cleaning our kitchen easier.
  27. Create placemats or a placeholder for each person joining you for Thanksgiving dinner. Share what makes you grateful for them on the placemat. (You can use construction paper or buy these inexpensive paper ones.)
  28. Read a Thanksgiving Book (If you need suggestions, you can check out this post for a great list.)
  29. Thankful Neighbors: Make a card or bake cookies for your neighbors. Take them over and tell them how thankful you are to have them as neighbors.

Thanksgiving Books and Celebrations

One of our favorite ways to celebrate various holidays is through books! Thanksgiving is a great one for books because there are so many wonderful books that look at Thanksgiving from various perspectives and topics. You can read books about the Pilgrims and Native Americans, books about the first Thanksgiving, books about gratitude, books about modern-day Thanksgiving, and fictional books that teach lessons about being thankful.

How to Use Books in Your Celebration

We use books in various ways, including having them set out as part of our seasonal decorations. This often sparks the interest of the children, and I find them reading the books that we have displayed. I can also pull from the display whenever we need a read-aloud for the family.

*Some of the links in my posts may be affiliate links; see below for more information. *

Thanksgiving Books

For my kindergartner, we are using these books as part of his reading curriculum and doing various seasonal activities to expand upon them. For example, we might read a book about turkeys, make a turkey craft, and sing some turkey songs. Another week we may choose a book about pilgrims or gratitude. We will definitely spend a week on Cranberry Thanksgiving doing various activities that we find as well as using some of the ones from Five in a Row. (Stay tuned for a post specifically on Cranberry Thanksgiving soon.)

Thanksgiving Books for Older Students

For my older children, we enjoy finding chapter books or more detailed picture books that relate to the holidays and allowing that to be their reading assignment for the week. Thanksgiving on Thursday is a good choice for elementary students. You could also use Samuel Eaton’s Day for a compare and contrast with Tapenum’s Day or Sarah Morton’s Day.

Quality Time with Books

We also really enjoy spending time together enjoying a book and a snack. Sometimes a specific snack that relates to the book, and sometimes something as simple as a store-bought cookie and a glass of milk. For example, we make cranberry bread when we read Cranberry Thanksgiving. Baking together is always fun, but don’t let that be a stumbling block. Using a boxed mix can still make memories.

What are your favorite ways to incorporate books into your holiday celebrations? Any great Thanksgiving books that I should add to my list

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week (Free Printables)

I just wanted to take a few minutes and let you know how appreciated you are this week! If you were working in a traditional school you would probably get gifts, snacks, or maybe even a special lunch.  I can’t offer you those things but I did want to take a minute and remind you that you are appreciated and the hard job you are doing is worth it!

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week

Your children may not tell you and may not even realize it themselves yet, but the time you spend with them is such a blessing. Knowing that you are always there for them, helping them learn, cooking their meals, being a listening ear is so important.

The days can seem long and often like we are not making any progress, but they are learning and growing in so many ways! God sees the hours and days that you are pouring into these children that he has blessed you with and you are appreciated.

Homeschool Teacher Appreciation Ideas

Take a few minutes this week and enjoy a cup of coffee with another homeschool mom or all by yourself. Have a piece of chocolate as you sit outside and listen to the birds chirp, call a pizza delivery place and give yourself a night off from dinner, or even check out some of the great deals going on right now and treat yourself.

You could even add a few flowers to your grocery order this week or light a candle and enjoy some quiet music. Know that even though you may not hear it from your children and there is no homeschool mom PTO to provide you with little gifts this week you are appreciated and your hard work is not in vain. Don’t forget to the other homeschool parents in your life that they are appreciated.

What are some simple ways that you can celebrate other homeschool moms or give yourself a little treat this week? Share your ideas in the comments.

My Homeschool Teacher Appreciation Gift to You!

50+ Reasons to Be Thankful for Homeschool!

I am so thankful for the opportunity and the blessing of homeschooling my children. However, like any family we also have our tough days. We have the days I feel like I can’t do it all. We have the days where the children are fighting with each other. We have days where decimals seem like they are going to get the best of us. On those days I find that it is so very beneficial to remember all the reasons that I am thankful we homeschool.

Thankful Pinterest

Our family has many reasons, including wanting to put God first in our lives, teaching true American history, family time, and the time freedom. I asked homeschool moms on my Facebook page and in our Schoolin’ Swag Facebook group to share with me the reasons they were thankful to homeschool. Some of them I have shared word for word and others I combined because multiple moms shared similar reasons. It is my prayer that when you are having a tough day or if you are considering making the switch to homeschooling, that these reasons would be an encouragement to you.

Take a few minutes with a hot cup of coffee or a cold drink of lemonade (or my personal favorite chocolate milk), read over this list and reflect on all the reasons to be thankful we can homeschool our children. If you have other reasons, I would love to have you share them with me in the comments.

  1. Witness every ‘first’
  2. Flexibility
  3. To raise them according to God’s word.
  4. I love spending time with my kids.
  5. Fun field trips
  6. Learning more about life on a daily basis.
  7. I’m thankful my husband & I get to be a bigger influence in our children’s lives than strangers who don’t share our family’s values. ❤️
  8. No more bullying at school.
  9. One big blessing(among so many) is seeing how close my children are to each other.
  10. I’m thankful for the time to get to really know them.
  11. I’m thankful for being able to cater to each individual way my child learns.
  12. I’m thankful I was able to instill a love of reading in two kiddos.
  13. I’m getting to build a strong relationship with my son.
  14. He learns at his pace, not the systems pace!
  15. I was glad I had spent EVERY MINUTE of him in his childhood ~ IT GOES SO FAST! (From a mom whose oldest is in college)
  16. I love the fact that we can school outside when the weather is appropriate.
  17. We can also school year round and take vacation days when we want to, not when scheduled for us.
  18. As homeschoolers my children have learned to get along with people of all ages.
  19. I don’t have a bunch of unteaching to do like I would have to if they attended school
  20. I can teach them the whole American history story.
  21. I can teach them what the Bible has to say in regards to science, philosophy, humanity, religions, etc.
  22. Kids can spend more time studying in detail the subjects they are interested in.
  23. It means when my 13-year-old son told me he would finish his project in a fortnight his comment had everything to do with the great books he’s reading and nothing to do with a video game.
  24. The life learning that happens.
  25. The uniqueness of my children’s personalities was allowed to blossom.
  26. They get more sleep and more unstructured time.
  27. ” As a mom of 6 with Multiple Sclerosis I couldn’t imagine schooling my kids in any other way. It provides the freedom we need, while we figure out structure with flexibility.”
  28. It is awesome to learn new things together.
  29. Have time for “extra” things like starting a garden together.
  30. We can read books together on topics that aren’t typically school subjects.
  31. They can learn to handle firearms and shoot safely without punishment for having a firearm.
  32. Siblings in different grades can learn together rather than rarely seeing each other throughout the day.
  33. We can take vacations as a family without working around school schedules.
  34. We have greater flexibility in scheduling medical and dental appointments.
  35. An older student can tutor a younger friend in a subject during a regular school day.
  36. We have a school holiday on birthdays.
  37. Early risers can start school while others are sleeping.
  38. We can eat breakfast together at a decent hour.
  39. We wanted our children to know us.
  40. We can go on nature walks together and notice details of the world around us.
  41. We can have long conversations about things that are side bars of a lesson and wind up having a completely unexpected lesson.
  42. All the coffee and like minded mommas out there.
  43. I’ve been learning all these years! I’m smarter now than I was 21 years ago when we started hs’ing
  44. I love that we can learn so many subjects from a Christian worldview and really discuss what we are learning.
  45. I love that when my child doesn’t understand a concept in math, we can stop and really focus on hands-on learning for as long as we need to until he gets it.
  46. I know they are safe (where they are, what they’re doing, who they’re with, no peer pressure).
  47. A hike in the mountains, baking cookies, building a fort, growing a garden, etc can be packed with lessons you can’t learn in a book.
  48. Mornings are less stressful.
  49. I don’t want my kids to fall through the cracks of the education system.
  50. We can let them have a say in their education.
  51. I’m grateful for how it’s forced my family into deeper relationship, better communication, and more learning for all of us! -Beth of Fit2B

Be encouraged today that this hard work you are doing is totally worth the hard work and the difficult days! You are not alone and it does get easier.

Thankful Thursday: The Three ‘F’s

FriendsField Trips&Family Time

When I decided to homeschool our children everyone from family to strangers had an opinion on what was best. Some folks thought we were crazy, some assumed I had lots of patience, some were encouraging, and some shared their concerns that our children would be missing out. For the record homeschool moms do not naturally have more patience than non-homeschool moms, but that is a post for another day.

Some of the most common concerns that people had are actually reasons that I am most thankful to be going ‘back to homeschool’ for another year of learning and growing as a family. Today we are going to discuss the three ‘F’s.  Friends and field trips were two things that some people assumed my homeschooled children would be missing out on. The thrid ‘F’ concern was family time, not a lack of it but having too much time together.

20180510_142853

Friends (or socialization) is a homeschool concern that is shared so much that it is a running joke in most homeschool circles. While there are exceptions both with homeschoolers and traditionally schooled children, homeschoolers in general have no lack of friends or social opportunities. In a regular school setting my children would spend the majority of their waking hours with the same group of same age children each day. In our lives as homeschoolers my children interact with many different groups of people throughout the week.

They have friends that are younger, friends that are older, and they interact with a variety of adults. When I look at my life outside of a classroom, my social interactions and my friends are made up of a variety of people from all ages and walks of life. In the natural flow of life we interact with a variety of people and I’m thankful that my children get that opportunity so frequently. They have friends they hike with, friends they do 4H with, friends in church, Trail Life, American Heritage Girls, friends that live in our town, friends that live several towns over, and a even a few friends we have to go visit out of state.

20170601_142510
Field Trip to Roanoke Island Festival Park

Field trips are one of the best educational opportunities available. When I was a student I enjoyed them and then as a teacher we used them to help provide experiences that would supplement our classroom instruction. In a school setting those opportunities were limited by funds, logistics, and often county policy. Funds can still be a limiting factor in our homeschool at times but we are able to take advantage of many opportunities for field trips and real life learning experiences. Everything from our twice monthly group hikes to a family trip to Washington DC become fun and educational trips. My children have had far more field trip opportunities in our homeschool than they would have had in a traditional school setting. I have not set up all of our trips but I already know in September that they will attend a concert, two hikes, apple picking, a visit to the mountains, and a trip to a cheese factory.

20180513_094942_002

The third ‘F’ is family time and honestly it is the one that makes me the saddest. This is the one where they tell me they couldn’t’ stand to be with their children all day. I don’t want to paint some unrealistic rosy picture where I never get frustrated with my children and I don’t enjoy a quiet dinner out with my husband on occasion. However, I am so very grateful that I have the opportunity to be with my children each day. I am the one that gets to teach them and share life with them. Of course there are days when I just want to lock myself in the closet with a candy bar for a few minutes of golden silence, but all in all I love doing life with my family. Homeschooling means that we can travel together, eat our meals together, spend time with my husband around his work schedule, and continue to learn and grow together.

Those are three of the many reasons that I’m thankful to homeschool. I’d love for you to share the reasons you are thankful to homeschool.

Thanksgiving Freebies

Is it about football?  Parades?  Food?  Family?  Freedom?  What?

It seems any holiday that has remotely spiritual connections has gotten muddled and commercialized.  We should not be surprised.  Dr. Bob Jones Sr. said that, “When gratitude dies on the altar of a man’s heart, that man is well-nigh hopeless.”  I believe it.  The Bible puts it this way:

Because that, when they knew God, they glorified [him] not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Rom 1:21

Boy that sounds like our generation.  We are “peculiar people” because we recognize all we have comes from God.  We are not self-made (except when it comes to our sin!):

All good gifts around us
Are sent from heaven above,
Then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord
For all His love.–Matthias Claudius, 1782

Here are some freebies to help you have a correct focus with your family and in your homeschool this Thanksgiving.  A free Thanksgiving lapbook, Thanksgiving unit study, and historical background for the holiday, including all the Presidential proclamations.
